Trekkies

Starring: Denise Crosby and various freak show wannabes. 87 min., PG

So who wants to see a real horror film? But the scary part about this documentary is that it is all too real. Yes, all these computer geek, uniform wearing, phaser toting Trekkies live among us common folk. Trekkies, the film, is a showcase of those who devote their lives to the cult show of the 1960's and of course the numerous sequel shows. All the Trekkies live on different levels of "freakness", from the ones who have seen every episode, to the lady who is always wearing her uniform and is refered to by most as "commander" (no I'm not lying, really!).

Why, oh why did I like this film. Three days after seeing this film, I still cannot figure it out. I did have a lot of laughs, mostly at the people and not with them, but it is a funny film. It is, I would say, informing at times, interesting, maybe, but most of all it is just plain weird. Since I have never met a Trekkie, I figured they just all lived under rocks and in caves somewhere in Kansas, but the film points out they are "all among us" (do do do).

So, if you have already seen Star Wars for the tenth time and you want to take a break before getting it line for Episode 2, take a look at Trekkies. Sci-fi fans will love, average people will get a good laugh and may learn something. And you thought the crazys only came out at night. Rating: B+
